Training Samian Specialists

The Department of Archaeology is unique in offering both samian expertise and reference collections. Our staff are committed to fostering and developing a new generation of samian specialists and, to this end, we founded the successful Samian Working Group.

All of our research projects have educational component and we have received substantial support from funding bodies and government agencies to support our work in this area:

  • The Felix Oswald Project ran four Samian Training Days for a group of volunteers drawn from our student community, Roman Pottery specialists and the Sherwood Archaeological Society.
  • The Samian Workshops has helped to raise standards in samian analysis
  • Profiling the Professionwas a reflective exercise – who needs a samian specialist?

Our students were involved in several of these projects and have the opportunity to take classes on pottery identification, analysis and interpretation.
