Research project: Late Roman City Programme (Nicopolis ad Istrum, Bulgaria)

Project details: The Late Roman City Programme (Nicopolis ad Istrum, Bulgaria)
Project director: Andrew Poulter

Nicopolis as Istrum (Bulgaria)

This long-term research programme was launched to identify changes in the character of cities in late antiquity. It involved major excavations and geophysical exploration on the site of a well-preserved late Roman town. It was demonstrated that radical changes in layout and function occurred in the 5th and 6th centuries AD. The large-scale ceramic and bioarchaeological programme suggested a no less fundamental change in the city's economic base during the early Byzantine period.
