Professor MacCarthy has been Professor of Operations Management at the University of Nottingham since January 2003. After an early career in industry he undertook his PhD at the University of Bradford in the early 1980s, followed by postdoctoral work in the Mathematics Institute at Oxford University. He joined Nottingham in the late 1980's.

His research spans the analysis, modelling and management of operational systems in a wide range of sectors. He has led major funded research projects on effective decision support in planning and scheduling, Mass Customization, Supply Chain management and Order Fulfilment modelling. Sources of funding have included the research councils, European funding agencies and industry. He has researched and consulted with a wide range of industries including textiles and clothing, automotive, aerospace, engineering, consumer products and food. He has published widely in the Operations Management and Management Science literature.

He teaches at Executive, MBA, Masters and undergraduate levels. He developed the Executive Masters programme in Global Supply Chain and Logistics Management with Rolls-Royce and Southampton University, which is now an open Executive Masters programme at Nottingham.

He is European Editor for the International Journal of Production Economics, published by Elsevier. He is a member of the editorial board for the International Journal of Operations and Production Management and the International Journal of Manufacturing and Technology Management. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics (IMA), the Institute of Operations Management (IOM) and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). He was President of the European Chapter of the Decision Sciences Institute (EDSI) from July 2011 until June 2012 and serves on DSI's Strategic Planning committee for International Affairs. He is a board member of the International Foundation for Production Research (IFPR) and is on the strategic advisory board for Nottingham's cross-disciplinary priority research group on manufacturing.

I teach operations and supply chain management as well as management science at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. I lead the Executive MBA module in Operations Management and have contributed to the design and presentation of the Executive Masters in Global Supply Chain Management. I supervise dissertations and projects on Masters programmes in Operations and Supply Chain Management and on the General and Executive MBA programmes.

Professor MacCarthy has conducted extensive research in supply chain management, particularly in the areas of supply chain planning, scheduling and control using modelling, analysis and simulation techniques. He is currently leading Nottingham's contribution to the EPSRC-funded multi-University study that is examining new modelling perspectives on risk, robustness and resilience in supply networks. He has also conducted extensive qualitative studies of practice in business and industry, most recently with a large study on configuration and coordination of international supply networks in the clothing industry. He has previously conducted pioneering research on Mass Customization and the challenges of managing in high variety environments. He has led major funded research projects with multi-company consortia on effective decision support in planning and scheduling, Mass Customization and Supply Chain management. These have included extensive modelling studies on order fulfilment with the Ford Motor Company and modelling and simulation of operations strategy for aerospace business environments with Volvo Aerospace and Rolls-Royce. Sources of funding have included the UK research councils, European funding agencies and industry. He has published widely in the Operations Management and Management Science literature.
