Our work in this area underpins the Department’s longstanding reputation for interdisciplinary research and intellectual and cultural history. We have particular strengths in American magazines and periodicals; the visual culture of slavery, abolitionism, and civil rights; contemporary American and Canadian literature; US Latino visual culture; American crime film; and Canadian film and postcolonial film adaptations.
We work closely with artists, archivists, curators, galleries, and museums, and staff have won many grants, fellowships, and prizes as a result of their research.

We have an active community of postgraduate students working in the area of print and visual culture. We welcome enquiries from potential postgraduates in any area of this field.
Our masters and PhD students have written on a wide range of print and visual culture topics. The Department also has dedicated reading groups on nineteenth-century print culture and contemporary literature. Both meet regularly to discuss ideas and scholarship.
