The Fragmentary Roman Historians project involves ten scholars from seven British Universities under the overall directorship of Tim Cornell (Manchester). Two of the team-members are current or previous members of the Nottingham Department: John Rich and Andrew Drummond.
The works of many Roman historical writers (writing in Greek as well as Latin) survive only in part, in quotations and allusions in other authors. The standard editions of these ‘fragments’ is the 1870 edition by Hermann W.G. Peter (Leipzig, 2 volumes). Although still extremely valuable and widely used, a century of scholarship has rendered it in need of revision.
The aim of the Fragmentary Roman Historians project is to produce a new edition of the texts of the fragments, accompanied by full English translation and commentary, in order to provide not only a research tool for specialist historians and experts in historiography, but also a useful and accessible corpus for university students.
