The Department of Classics at the University of Nottingham has pioneered non-traditional assessment in Classics since 1992 with our innovative module, the Independent Second Year Project (ISYP). In this module, students select not only the subject-matter of their work but also the format in which they submit it.
This 20-credit second year module fits into a framework of independent study modules in a graded sequence leading to the 40-credit third year dissertation; it also encourages students to integrate their academic learning with the world beyond University by inviting them to consider ways of communicating their knowledge to non-academic audiences, including future employers.
External examiners have highly commended the creative and skills-led modes of engagement encouraged by this module.
From 2007-2010, the Department was supported by the Centre for Integrative Learning at the University and by the HEA Subject Centre for History, Classics and Archaeology in a project to examine and improve various aspects of this module and to share the results of an expanded understanding of this innovative type of assessment. This website forms part of that dissemination.
