Vote in the upcoming mayoral elections

Friday, 12 April 2024
The first ever election for a mayor for the East Midlands will take place on Thursday 2 May.

Derbyshire, Derby, Nottinghamshire and Nottingham have opened the door to a massive £4 billion investment in transport, skills, housing and the environment after securing a deal for a new combined authority – the East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA).

EMCCA has been formed by Derbyshire County Council, Derby City Council, Nottinghamshire County Council and Nottingham City Council, and will be led by a mayor, similar to areas like the West Midlands, Greater Manchester and South Yorkshire.

The mayor will have new powers and resources to begin a long-term process of growing the region’s economy by investing in skills that lead to better jobs, transport that works better across the region, housing where it’s needed, and an economy equipped to deal with net zero.

This small team will have specific responsibilities – housing, skills, transport and the environment – and the transfer of powers means it will be doing work previously carried out by government. It will collaborate with councils and will not duplicate what they do or provide services that are best delivered locally.

Why should I vote?

Students make up one in seven of the local population and so by voting in local elections you can make a real difference.

Being on the electoral register is also an easy way to boost your credit score. Having a good credit score is beneficial when buying or renting a home, accessing lower interest rates, taking out new mobile phone contracts and more.

How do I vote?

In order to get involved you will need to register to vote. As a university student you can register to vote at both your home and term-time addresses.

To register to vote online you just need five minutes and your National Insurance number. Plus, if you register now you will save time registering to vote in the general elections this September.

The deadline for voting registration is Tuesday 16 April.

Voting will then take place on Thursday 2 May. Registered voters will receive a polling card through their university postal address with details about voting, including where to vote and the location for your nearest polling station.
