Biography

Dr. Lawes is an Assistant Professor in Manufacturing Metrology at the University of Nottingham, part of the Advanced ManufacturingAdvanced Manufacturing and Process Technologies group. Prior to this post he worked at the University of Leicester, where he obtained a BEng in General Engineering in 2005, a PhD in the study of wear resistant thin films for automotive applications in 2009, and worked as senior experimental officer in the Mechanics of Materials research group 2008 through to 2012. His research themes include the principles and practice of design, particularly the role of computing in the future of design practice, and the development of precision machines.

Expertise Summary

During his time at the University of Leicester in his role as experimental officer Dr. Lawes supported a broad range of research subjects from; pharmaceutical powder mechanics, to microstructural evolution in high strength power plant steels, to the kinematics of stab wounding, and virtual autopsy by X-ray CT. He has significant experience in destructive and non-destructive materials testing including; SEM, AFM, XRD, neutron diffraction, tensile and fatigue testing, thin film scratch, abrasion and adhesion testing, nano-indentation, Raman spectroscopy, calorimetry and the design and operation of bespoke test equipment for the Automotive industry. In his time at the University of Nottingham his work has centered on novel manufacturing methods and practices, particularly the role of metrology.

Teaching Summary

Dr. Lawes's teaching is focused on the theory and practice of design. He currently teaches on the following undergraduate modules;

MM2DM2 - Design and Manufacture 2

MM2EM2 - Electromechanical Systems

MM3CAE - Computer Aided Engineering

MM4GDM - Group Design and Manufacture

as well and providing central taught courses for post-graduates in programming LabVIEW for Engineers.
