Research Centres

The School of Geography has founded and also co-hosts a number of Centres dedicated to furthering research and develop understanding in critically important areas impacting on individuals, organisations and society in general.

The School has particular research strengths in the environment, geospatial science and economic and human geography.

The Centre for Environmental Management (CEM)

CEM is located within the School and undertakes research and training at the interface of people and the environment. Its work explores ways of identifying the choices we face in developing and implementing strategies for a sustainable future. Its aims are to:

  • Encourage inter- and transdisciplinary research in the area of Environmental Management and sustainable development.
  • Promote postgraduate and executive training in partnership with people and organisations outside the University.
  • To support the taught postgraduate programme in Environmental Informatics and Land Quality Management.

The Centre for the Environment (CfE)

CfE was established to provide focus for taking forward inter-disciplinary approaches to environmental teaching and research within the University. At its core are six Schools and Institutes, which span the natural, physical and social sciences. They are:

The School of Biology
The School of Biosciences
The School of the Built Environment
The School of Chemical, Environmental and Mining Engineering (SChEME)
The School of Civil Engineering
The School of Geography
The China Policy Institute (CPI)

The Centre, however, actively seeks to work with others within the University and beyond, to promote an integrated approach to the teaching of, and research into, environmental issues that are relevant to the goals of sustainable development.
