Child Community PLT Discussion Area

Hello and welcome to your child Virtual Practice Learning Team page, bringing together mentors who support child field students in practice. This site is not intended to replace face to face contact but is an additional resource to help students and mentors get the most out of practice placements.

For the latest news from your PLT please visit the link below this text. I would really like to promote team debate using the discussion area below, so please remember to scroll down and post your comments, questions and opinions. I will always get back to you and may post links to resources currently available on the main practice learning site. Your opinion and experience is extremely valuable please feel free to share it. If you are able to offer help and advice to colleague you can do this by contributing to the discussion area.

I look forward to hearing from you and working as part of this team.

Helen

    Hi,

The virtual PLT is now up and running please feel free to post your comments and questions. I would like to start putting together a document helping signpost mentors and students to the types of evidence they might want to produce in order to meet the NMC competencies whilst on community placements. There are already some examples of this that I can share but I think it would be useful to have a document produced locally for the students on placement in Derby and Derbyshire. Your thoughts, comments and offers of help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks Helen

    Hi everyone,

Do take a look at the new 'Shape of Caring' report, released last week. (copy and paste the link)

    http://hee.nhs.uk/wp-content/blogs.dir/321/files/2015/03/2348-Shape-of-caring-review-FINAL.pdf

This report by Lord Willis presents proposals for changes to the education and training of registered Nurses and Care Assistants, with some interesting suggestions about student mentorship.

These proposals are now to the subject of wider consultation. Look out for your chance to offer your opinions - we'll keep you posted on anything we hear!

    Dear All,

Our 1209 BSc students and 1401 GEN students are approaching their management placements. Their 12 week management placement is a hub placement and hub paperwork is available in the OAR. Your comments and questions regarding management placements would be welcomed.

Following our tripartite interview today we have been asked to share a few of our top tips! My student is on her first placement in the community working with the health visiting team. We have used the 6 'c's as a base for daily reflection, which has proved invaluable and has made the headings like second nature! This has helped her see ways in which her attitude and knowledge skills can affect her care and communication with the different age groups that we care for. In order to cross reference the competencies we have devised a matrix, which makes it much easier to link evidence across the domains. We were unsure whether a community placement with little opportunity for clinical skills would be appropriate for a first placement, however it has demonstrated that having an awareness of home situations, a psychological approach and holistic knowledge will have a positive impact on care of children within the hospital setting.
