Biography

Dr David Knight is Head of Research at York Archaeology, with 40 years of experience in professional archaeology since completing a BA in Geography at the University of Durham and a DPhil at the University of Oxford on the subject of Bronze Age and Iron Age settlement in the English Midlands. His areas of expertise include Bronze Age and Iron Age Britain, prehistoric ceramics and the archaeological and paleoenvironmental record of the Trent Valley. Recent projects include publication of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site and East Midlands Historic Environment Research Frameworks, study of the archaeological resource of Nottingham, an assessment of climate change impacts upon the archaeological and built environment resource of the Derwent Valley, the preparation of national guidance for deposit modelling and ceramic analysis and the development of a research framework for the study of prehistoric ceramics. He is currently working on conversion of the East Midlands and DVMWHS Research Frameworks to interactive digital resources, publications of excavations of prehistoric sites in the Trent Valley and a variety of projects focusing upon the cultural and environmental history of the Derwent Valley (with particular reference to the potential impacts of climate change upon the cultural heritage resource).

He is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and a member of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists, Council for British Archaeology, the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site Partnership (Chair of Research Group), European Association of Archaeologists ('Climate Change and Heritage' Community), Prehistoric Society, Prehistoric Ceramics Research Group (Vice-chair), Thoroton Society of Nottinghamshire (Council member), Nottinghamshire Archaeology Panel and the Derbyshire and Northamptonshire Archaeological Societies.
