Structure of the Degree

A Masters degree at Nottingham consists of a taught part and a research part. Each module carries a credit weighting and the total number of credits for a Masters degree is 180.

Students take 120 credits during the taught element of the programme and then proceed to a researched dissertation (60 credits). Taught modules run either for two terms (30 credits or Full Year Option (FYO)) or for one term (normally 15 credits). Teaching is normally by a weekly two-hour seminar in each module. Students are encouraged and expected to participate in seminars, which is a reflection of the interactive nature of the programme.

To qualify for one of the specialist Taught Masters degrees, at least 90 credits of taught modules and the dissertation topic must come within the relevant specialism. The remaining taught modules (up to 30 credits) can be taken from anywhere on the programme. If you do not wish to specialize, you may take any 120 credits’ worth of modules. In addition, students are required to take four modules each term. The modules listed under each particluar course form the taught modules available for the relevant specialised programme and can be accessed here. A candidate who elects not to pursue any of the specialist degrees will be awarded the LLM (Master of Laws) on successful completion of the programme.

All modules offered by the School of Law are worth 15 credits except the following, which are worth 30 credits and run in both the Autumn and Spring terms:

• Biodiversity and International Law

• EU Competition Law

• International Humanitarian Law

• International Sale of Goods

• Law of International Carriage of Goods by Sea

• Law of Marine Insurance
