Funding Opportunities

School of Law General Scholarships

The School of Law each year normally offers a number of general (open) scholarships. These are advertised at jobs.ac.uk at the end of December each year, as well as on our web pages, with a closing date of 31 January.

In some cases preference may be given to candidates in certain subject areas in which the School of Law is unlikely to be oversubscribed. The School may also make available a scholarship reserved for students who have studied on the Nottingham LLM degree.

All applicants for a place on the research students' programme will be considered automatically for these School of Law scholarships (unless they have already been awarded a scholarship covering the same fees and maintenance); no separate application is necessary. Late applicants may only be considered only if there is sufficient time to process the application before the scholarship decisions are made, and the Law School reserves the right to decline to consider any late application.

Candidates offered School of Law scholarships will be expected to apply for relevant external scholarships. The School will support and assist selected applicants to these competitions, working closely with the applicant in drawing up the research proposal and application. In the event that the application for external funding is successful, the School of Law reserves the right to deduct the amount awarded from the School's scholarship, which will be cascaded to the next suitable candidate.

The criteria for award of the scholarships will be:

  • qualifications and potential
  • performance at interview, if any
  • the quality of the research proposal
  • practical experience and knowledge relevant to the area of research.

School scholarships cover full (Home/EU) fees and maintenance. Overseas candidates would be responsible for any shortfall in the overseas fees. The School of Law will endeavour ro assist oversees students in securing any available additional funding for this purpose.

The scholarships are available for a period of one year initially, with the expectation of renewal for a further two years, subject to satisfactory performance on the programme.

The holder of all School scholarships will be required to register full-time for the degree of MPhil/PhD and may be required to provide teaching in undergraduate programmes at the discretion of the School Manager.

Other Scholarships

The School of Law also has a role in allocating some other scholarships, in that the School is requested to rank eligible applicants in order of preference to assist the awarding body. For this purpose the School will generally use the basic ranking list produced for the purpose of its own scholarships as set out above. Candidates will be recommended based on this list, except that:

  • any factors relevant to specific scholarships which have not been included in drawing up the basic ranking list will, of course, be considered in addition to the list in making recommendations for those specific scholarships; and
  • the fact that criteria considered in drawing up the ranking list which are specifically provided not to be relevant for the particular scholarship will also be taken into account.
