New partnership forged between Nottingham and Panjab University

A delegation from India’s top ranking University, Panjab University, recently visited The University of Nottingham to investigate possibilities for new collaborations.

The visit from the University, which is based in Chandigarh, which involved 10 people, was part of a British Council initiative to help India’s top ranking university develop partnerships with UK institutions.

The delegation included academics from faculties ranging from chemical engineering and energy to food processing and social sciences. In addition, representatives also attended from Bhatnagar University Institute of Chemical Engineering and Technology and PEC University of Technology Chandigarth.

Exploring partnership opportunities
Hosted by The University of Nottingham’s Asia Business Centre, the Indian delegation met with staff from across the University to gain an understanding of the range of research activities, industrial links, commercialisation activities and to explore opportunities for collaborative partnerships.

Nottingham entrepreneur, Hardev Singh, Trustee of The Haydn Green Foundation, which funds the Haydn Green Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the University, said: “After our recent visit to Chandigarh and Panjab University with Nottingham City delegates to promote Economic, Educational, Sport and Cultural ties between Nottingham City and Punjab, it was our pleasure to welcome this delegation from Panjab University organised by the British Council in India to The University of Nottingham.

“We are further looking forward to the proposed visit of the Vice Chancellor of Panjab University, Mr Arun Grover, to The University of Nottingham in late August to strengthen the relationship between the two universities.”

Most highly ranked Indian university
Panjab University, one of the oldest Universities in India, has overtaken the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) to become the highest-ranked educational institution of the country, in the first-ever ranking of universities in BRICS and emerging economies.

Earlier this month, Nottingham City Council visited Chandigarh where both parties decided to explore opportunities for collaborations between the universities in each city.

India is an important market for The University of Nottingham, with numerous Indian students studying at Nottingham, mainly at post-graduate level. The University has an excellent scholarship scheme called Developing Solutions which funds Indian students in engineering, medicine and health sciences, geography, and operations management.

A distinguished delegation
Jason Feehily, Head of Asia Business Centre at The University of Nottingham, said: “It was excellent to see such a large and distinguished delegation from India visiting the University, and the Asia Business Centre was delighted to host them. This is part of a sustained relationship with Panjab University and the region utilising cultural, civic and academic links to best advantage.”
