Partnership with India to train tomorrow's teachers

The University of Nottingham has agreed a partnership with The International School Bangalore (TISB) Training Academy in India to run a postgraduate teacher education course.

The partnership will enable the University to offer the International Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCEi) to students in South Asia, with 25 students starting in the first year, rising to 60 in subsequent years.

Students will be based in South Asia, and will meet University of Nottingham tutors in Bangalore before progressing to work online.

Teacher training
Dr Lucy Cooker, Director of International Teacher Development at the University of Nottingham had always been aware that there was a demand for the PGCEi in India, as almost 30 Indian teachers have successfully completed the course via other international cohorts in recent years.

Speaking about the partnership, Dr Cooker said: “Establishing a partnership with the prestigious TISB Training Academy is a very exciting development for us. It means that we can now offer University of Nottingham high quality teacher education in South Asia, opening up a whole new market for us.”

The University of Nottingham’s work with The International School Bangalore is not the only partnership it has established in India. It has also built a strong relationship with the Chandigarh region, signing an agreement with Panjab University for collaborative research, new business ventures and economic investment in both Nottingham and India. 

Wider collaborations
A high level delegation from the Chandigarh region recently visited Nottingham to explore wider collaborations with the City and University in areas such as energy management, trade and investment and a potential sister city agreement.

Jason Feehily, Head of Knowledge Exchange Asia at the University of Nottingham, added:  “The University has an excellent track record in the delivery of training programmes in Asia. I am hopeful that the PGCEi will be just the start of our partnership with The International School Bangalore, and that we will be able to explore new ideas for collaboration going forward.

“It is also very pleasing to see the expansion of our existing relationship with the city of Chandigarh too. They are keen to investigate opportunities to work with the University and local businesses. India is still an untapped market, and we are looking forward to working with these partners and others in the country over the coming years.”
