Michael Clark was educated at the University of Oxford, where he was an Open Scholar at Exeter College. He took a First in Philosophy and Psychology (PPP). His first academic post was at the University of Aberdeen, where he spent five years, first as Assistant Lecturer in Logic and Moral Philosophy, and then, a year later, as Lecturer in Logic. He moved to the University of Nottingham, where he was successively lecturer, senior lecturer, reader and professor of philosophy. In 1974-75 he was Visiting Associate Professor, and in the fall semester of 1979 Visiting (full) Professor of Philosophy at the University of New Orleans.

He is now Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at Nottingham.

Since 2000 he has been editor of the leading journal Analysis.

He has published widely in a variety of areas, including philosophical logic and the philosophy of law.
