Title: Chip-scale atomic devices:from clocks to brain imaging and beyond.
Abstract
For centuries, compact timing instruments and magnetic sensors have been essential tools enabling navigation. We describe recent work at NIST to develop compact atomic clocks and magnetometersbased on precision atomic spectroscopy, photonics and silicon micromachining. These instruments achieve a desirable combination of high performance, low power consumption and ease of manufacturing, which has led to their adoption in a variety of application spaces such as underwater timing for oil and gas exploration and magnetic imaging of the human brain.
