School of Politics and International Relations

Rethinking Politics in a Volatile World

The fourth annual Nottingham Postgraduate Conference in Politics and International Relations was held on 10 June 2016 at The University of Nottingham.

The PGR conference committee selected 28 interesting papers, which included papers from within the UK, Ireland, and Europe as well as from Asia. We were also pleased to have Professor Emeritus Chris Brown from the London School of Economics and Political Science to deliver the keynote titled ‘Sovereignty and Human Rights in a Non-Western World’ in the evening.

This event was attended by approximately 75 participants and we were very honoured that Sir Peter Housden sat in on several sessions. Generally we received good feedback on the conference from the attendees.

We must say that this was not possible without the help of Professor Steve Fielding, who guided us from the start; Ailsa Mitchell, who gave us relentless support in organizing this event; Carole Yates who gave meticulous attention to the details of the conference; Veronica Blake, John Pollock and Dale Breame for their warm support in the process; and also our Chairs who agreed to act as discussants on the day of the conference.

However, this conference was not possible without our sponsors. We are very grateful for the funding from the School of Politics and International Relations, the Nottingham Interdisciplinary Centre for Economic and Political Research (NICEP), the Centre for British Politics (CBP) and the Centre for the Study of Political Ideologies (CSPI).

Overall, we were grateful to be given a chance to organize the conference with the full support of the school. We believe it has benefited all of us in many ways.
