Biography

Lee Richards is a doctoral researcher in the School of Politics & International Relations. His research project, a collaborative doctoral partnership between the Imperial War Museum and the University of Nottingham, intends to make a critical reassessment of covert 'black' propaganda produced by the Political Warfare Executive (PWE). Working principally with IWM's unique collection of black propaganda and in collaboration with additional archival sources, Lee's project will examine the effectiveness and contribution PWE covert propaganda operations made to the war effort and examine its post-war legacy. PWE's relationships with other intelligence organisations will be investigated to illustrate how British propaganda operations were underpinned by a bedrock of intelligence derived from a disparate range of both open and closed sources. Lee also hopes to uncover the backgrounds and motivations of the group of enemy refugees, deserters and prisoners of war who volunteered their services to aid Britain's propaganda war.
