Publication of the Month- February 2023

Welcome to our Publication of the Month news release series, where we highlight some of the work that is taking place within the School of Psychology. This month, we are featuring a journal by Eranda Jayawickreme, Eli Tsukayama, and Laura Blackie, titled: ‘Examining the impact of major life events on the frequency and experience of daily social events’, published in The Journal of Personality. Laura has put together a few words describing what her research entails.

Major life events can influence people's well-being by changing how daily events are perceived. A recent year-long longitudinal study by Eranda Jayawickreme, Eli Tsukayama, and Laura Blackie examined the dynamic interplay between major life events and daily life events on individuals' current states of well-being and ill-being. They found that some major life events encouraged individuals to contrast their later hedonic experiences. For example, the experience of major positive life events weakened the relationship between the experience of positive daily social events and well-being. They also found some major life experiences enhanced the impact of later experiences. For example, the experience of major negative life events strengthened the experience of negative social events and ill-being. However, there were also some findings that did not fit neatly into these patterns and require future study to examine the impact of major life events on engagement in affective contrasting and endowment.
