Smart sensor bandage could reduce numbers affected by diabetic amputations

A disposable wound dressing embedded with optical fibre sensors could help reduce the billions spent on healthcare costs for wound management. Led by Professor Steve Morgan, researchers in the Centre for Healthcare Technologies are developing a smart wound dressing that uses sensors to assess whether affected tissue is healing well or is infected. The project has received £0.9m from the Medical Research Council to progress the innovation and will focus initially on chronic foot ulcer treatment for diabetes patients. The story has been picked up by The Engineer and Professional Engineering magazine.
