Description

"Nasty Chinese Women Can Say No!”

The Rise of Queer, Feminist Activism in China - a conversation with Li Maizi

On the eve of International Women's Day, March 8 2015, Li Maizi (aka Li Tingting) and four other prominent feminist and LGBT activists (the "Feminist Five") were detained by Chinese authorities for planning to distribute stickers highlighting sexual harassment on public transportation. Since their release, the "Feminist Five" and a growing movement of activists continue to push for greater equality and awareness. Marking the second anniversary of her detention, Li Maizi joins Dr Sarah Dauncey (School of Sociology and Social Policy) and PhD candidate Séagh Kehoe (School of Politics and International Relations) to discuss the current landscape of feminist and LGBT activism in China, and its future.
