Monitoring of our sustainability programmes is carried out through internal reporting and external assessment. Internal reports to Environment Committee focus on progress achieved against our Sustainability Strategy and Carbon Management Plan. These are reported to University Council on an annual basis and six-monthly to University Executive Board.
Annual sustainability reports are available to the right. External assessments and benchmarking of our sustainability performance are based on the EcoCampus and UI Green Metric of World Universities programmes.
The University participates in the EcoCampus programme to develop and progress our environmental management system (EMS). An EMS helps to identify and reduce impacts on the environment and set and achieve objectives and time-bound targets for environmental improvement.
The programme provides an approach that recognises progress through four awards:
- Planning (Bronze) - achieved
- Implementing (Silver)
- Operating (Gold)
- Checking and Correcting (Platinum)
UI Green Metric
The UI Green Metric is an initiative of Universitas Indonesia that ranks universities throughout the world across a range of areas, including energy use, waste and water management, transport, teaching and learning and research. The University of Nottingham first completed this metric in 2010 and was ranked second in the world; we have continued to be placed in the top 2 every year since.
