FoundationJump to undergraduate courses

Our foundation courses provide an entry route to selected degrees in arts, business, engineering, science and social sciences. They are an opportunity to gain the skills and knowledge needed to undertake a bachelors degree while studying at a world-class university.

Which programme?

We offer four programmes: the Engineering Foundation Year, the Science Foundation Year, the Foundation Certificate in Business and the Foundation Certificate in Arts and Social Sciences.

The Engineering and Science Foundation Year programmes are open to UK and international students whose school leaving qualifications do not meet the requirements for undergraduate programmes in science, including computer science, and engineering. They have been specifically designed to provide you with the best possible grounding for entry into our wide range of undergraduate degree programmes. Provided you successfully complete the Foundation Year at Nottingham and pass the relevant modules at the required standard, you will be able to progress into year one of your chosen degree subject.

Your teaching will be delivered by academic staff from within the Faculties of Engineering and Science. This will ensure that the foundation course is fully integrated into your degree programme and the topics you cover during the foundation stage are perfectly matched to subsequent stages of your course. For this reason the success rate for students progressing from our foundation programme is very high.

The Foundation Certificates in Business, and in Arts and Social Sciences, are designed for international students with high academic ability who need an extra year’s study to prepare them for a bachelors degree in an arts, business or social sciences subject, either at The University of Nottingham or another university. You will meet and make lifelong contacts and will benefit from a comprehensive support network.

Studying at Nottingham

As a student on any of our foundation programmes, you will be a full member of the University community and will have full access to all the opportunities and facilities the University has to offer.

Career prospects

After progressing onto and successfully completing a University of Nottingham bachelors degree, you will possess a world-renowned qualification which is recognised by national and international employers. You will have had the opportunity to gain a wide range of transferable skills and develop in-depth knowledge. Like all University of Nottingham students you will have lifelong access to the University’s Careers and Employability Service.
