Science uncovered - open day reveals all

Ever wanted to know what goes on behind the research laboratory door? Now is your chance to find out – especially if you are interested in animals and plants.

The University of Nottingham’s Sutton Bonington Campus is holding its first ever Science Open Day on Saturday 17 March 2012. In celebration of National Science and Engineering Week the Schools of Biosciences and Veterinary Medicine and Science are throwing open their doors to the public.

Hands-on science activities, tours and demonstrations to showcase science will be staged throughout the day. There will be a chance to find out how remote control helicopters can help plant scientists, how to lamb a sheep, see an unusual skeleton painted horse, and an opportunity to sample the delights of the highly successful student-run Sutton Bonington Farmers’ Market.

There will be something for all ages from a Teddy Bear’s Vet Surgery and a demonstration about ‘bugs, bubbles and biofuels’ to science-themed movie screenings complete with expert introductions with snacks provided by our very own food scientists.

Dr Cath Rees, Outreach Co-ordinator for the School of Biosciences said: “We want to get people who live locally to come and visit the campus and give them a flavour of the exciting science that happens here, in a fun and engaging way”.

Prof Gary England, Foundation Dean of the School of Veterinary Medicine and Science and Professor of Comparative Veterinary Reproduction, said: “We are excited about this initiative and keen to open our doors to people from the local community so that they can see first hand some of the exciting work undertaken in research and teaching on our campus. We hope that it will be an interesting, stimulating and entertaining day”.

The event takes place from 11.30am to 15.30pm on Saturday 17 March 2012, at The University of Nottingham, Sutton Bonington Campus, Sutton Bonington, Leicestershire, LE12 5RD.

National Science and Engineering Week is a ten day programme of science, engineering and technology events and activities across the UK aimed at people of all ages. This year it will run from 9th to 18th March. The theme is 'Our world in motion'. National Science and Engineering Week is funded by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills and led by the British Science Association. The programme also works in partnership with Engineering UK www.nsew.org.uk
