Expertise Summary
My research focuses on the speciation and fractionation of radioisotopes and trace elements in the environment and the geochemistry of trace element deficiency/toxicity. Specific projects include (i) an investigation of the kinetics of radioisotope fixation in soils (129I, 99Tc, 235U, 84Se), (ii) iodine and selenium dynamics in soils, including projects in the UK, northern Pakistan, Somalia, Iraqi Kurdistan and Malawi (iii) the kinetics of uranium(VI) fixation on biochar, (iv) trace element behaviour in calcareous soils in Iraqi Kurdistan, (v) the lability, fractionation and origin of Pb in Egyptian soils, (vi) exposure of households to trace elements from the Kilembe copper mine and tailing sites in Western Uganda (vii) stabilization-solidification of Libyan drilling muds (viii) fate of zinc sulphide nanoparticles in soil. I co-run the departmental ICP-MS facility.
