Facilities and equipment
The School of Biosciences has high-specification facilities that support research across the entire food system. Most of our facilities are technically supported and available for use by internal researchers, external researchers and industry.
The School of Biosciences has extensive and well-equipped molecular biology, microbiology, tissue culture, imaging and analytical laboratories.
Plant and crop growth facilities
Unrivalled facilities including high specification controlled environment rooms with precise, uniform and repeatable control of temperature, light, humidity and other environmental conditions. We also have extensive glasshouses, polytunnels and field trial sites.
Plant Growth Facilities
We are home to the Centre for Dairy Science Innovation for applied research in nutrition, environment, infection and immunity, located on the University of Nottingham Farm.
Centre for Dairy Science Innovation
A well-equipped laboratory hosts a range of analytical chromatography equipment including unique real-time mass spectrometry for chemical analysis of volatile flavour compounds.
Food Analysis Consultancy and Training Service
Our Food Processing Facility houses a wide range of commercial scale food production and testing equipment, including an extruder, homogeniser, texture and viscosity analysers, for new product development.
Food Processing Facility
The Hounsfield Facility hosts high resolution 3D imaging equipment, including laser ablation and X-ray computed tomography, that is transforming our understanding of soil structure, root morphology and helping us develop novel crop varieties.
Our research brewery facility houses equipment for micromalting and wort production and a 10hL pilot scale brewery.
International Centre for Brewing Science
State of the art facilities in the sensory science centre include sensory booths with controlled temperature, lighting, ventilation and physiological recording equipment for high quality sensory evaluation.
