Biography

Karen is an Anne McLaren Fellow in the School of Pharmacy and a UK registered Pharmacist with multi-sector experience working across industry, community and hospital pharmacy (Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust). She completed a PhD at the University of Nottingham in 2014, working with Prof. Stephanie Allen and Dr Jonathan Burley. Her PhD was in collaboration with AstraZeneca and focused on designing quality into the formulation and manufacture of protein therapeutics. With an interest in data analysis and robust experimental designs, Karen worked as a Statistician for Mars, Inc. before returning to the University of Nottingham in 2016 to become manager of the Nanoscale and Microscale Research Centre (nmRC), a state-of-the-art analytical facility for the advanced characterisation of materials. Karen is an advocate for technical specialists and has extensive experience leading diverse teams, engaging with industry, and conducting knowledge exchange activities. In 2023, she was awarded an Anne McLaren Fellowship to pursue her independent research career, which unites her interests in patient care, biologics manufacture and advanced analytical techniques.

Current Research

Karen's research focuses on developing high quality biological medicines, utilising advanced characterisation techniques to probe molecular level instability at the root cause of quality challenges. Current research interests include the detection and analysis of substandard products, nucleic acid formulation and delivery, and improving the thermal stability of biologics. Her interests also extend to evolving pharmaceutical manufacturing processes and global health policy for improving patient access to high quality medicines.
