Professor Dame Jessica Corner
Professor Dame Jessica Corner is Pro-Vice-Chancellor (PVC) for Research and Knowledge Exchange.
The PVC Research and Knowledge Exchange provides strategic leadership for research and industry engagement. She has accountability for delivery of the University’s Global Strategy 2020 for World-changing research, involving driving research performance and growth, widely engaging in the national and international research landscape, ensuring the highest quality outcomes in research stature, impact and funding. She works closely with:

Professor Corner is a member of the University Executive Board and chairs various University boards including Nottingham Technology Ventures and University of Nottingham Italy.
Professor Dame Jessica Corner is Professor of Cancer and Supportive Care. She joined the University of Nottingham on 1st January 2016 as PVC (Research & Knowledge Exchange). Jessica has over 35 years’ experience in Higher Education. One of the first students to graduate with a degree in Nursing from London University, she went on to specialize in Cancer Nursing at the Royal Marsden Hospital. She gained her PhD in 1990 from Kings College London. She was Director of the Centre of Cancer and Palliative care Studies and Deputy Dean (Nursing) at the Institute of Cancer Research at the Royal Marsden Hospital for 12 years and was the first nurse to be appointed to a Chair at the Institute. She joined the University of Southampton in 2002. In 2005 she was seconded to Macmillan Cancer Support to work as Director of Improving Cancer Services returning to Southampton University in 2008 to become Head of the School of Health Sciences. She was appointed as Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at Southampton University from 2010 until December 2015.
Jessica continues to hold a number of key national roles. She is Registrar of the Academy of Medical Sciences, the first nurse to hold this role in the Academy’s history. She was awarded a DBE in 2014 for services to Health Care Research and Education and elected a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2015.
Teaching and Research Summary
The main focus of Professor Dame Jessica Corner’s research has been on improving the care and support for people with cancer combining academic, clinical work and research.
Most recently Dame Jessica’s focus has been on health outcomes following treatment for cancer as part of national and international efforts around cancer survivorship. She is a world-renowned academic in her field with over 200 academic publications. She led the University of Southampton Health Sciences REF 2014 submission, ranked first in the UK for Research Intensity and impact. She is a member of Panel 3 Allied Health, Dentistry, Nursing and Pharmacy, for REF 2021.
