Biography
Dr. Jon Atkinson is a Senior Research Fellow employed by the Future Food Beacon of Excellence as a Technologist in Phenomics.
His research interests include cereal root physiology, root-soil interactions, and the development of phenotyping platforms at the anatomical, whole plant and field scales.
As part of his current role, Jon also manages the FutureFood MakerSpace - an innovation and training hub designed to solve phenomics problems in food research. He also co-manages the Laser Ablation Tomography suite, a BBSRC ALERT17 funded device for high throughput anatomical phenotyping.
Expertise Summary
My research interests are in the study of root architecture, anatomy, and more recently in root-soil interactions; specifically how roots respond to various signals and stimuli within the soil profile such as pore spaces or soil compaction.
I am currently part of several externally funded research projects covering a variety of research topics such as; pearl millet root anatomical responses to drought, water use efficiency in wheat, and a project designing a training course in plant phenotyping, data capture and analysis.
