Professor Marina Novelli appointed as Chair of the World Committee on Tourism Ethics (WCTE) for the 2025-2029 term
Professor Marina Novelli, Director of the Sustainable Travel and Tourism Advanced Research (STTAR) Centre and Professor of Marketing and Tourism at Nottingham University Business School, has been appointed to the prestigious role of Chair of the World Committee on Tourism Ethics (WCTE) for the 2025-2029 term.
Established in 2003, the WCTE is an independent and impartial body under the aegis of the UN Tourism (formerly known as UN World Tourism Organisation), a specialised Agency of the United Nations responsible for the promotion of responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism. The WCTE is responsible for the promotion, and dissemination of the UN Tourism Global Code of Ethics for Tourism, as well as the evaluation and monitoring of the implementation of the principles enshrined therein.
As a subsidiary of the UN Tourism General Assembly, the Committee reports directly to the Assembly on regular basis. Members are elected in their personal capacities and not as officials of governments or representatives of their countries.
Professor Novelli will lead the WCTE’s work to actively promote responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism by overseeing the implementation of the UN Tourism Global Code of Ethics for Tourism and providing guidance on ethical issues in tourism.
During her previous term as Alternate Member of the WCTE (2021-2025) Professor Novelli shared her critical knowledge about tourism and commitment to advancing responsible and ethical practices in the sector. Her appointment as Chair of the WCTE is a recognition of her leadership and wide-reaching influence in shaping the future of tourism.
Marina said:
It is a great honour to be entrusted with this role. Together with the Committee members, I look forward to advancing the work of the WCTE and its commitment to ensuring that tourism continues to be a force for good, benefiting people, communities, and the planet.
