Professor David Park, facilitated a Q&A and panel discussion

Local businesses recently attended the Nottingham University Business School 'What is Good Governance?' event held in the Executive Education suite at the University’s new Castle Meadow Campus.

This was a fantastic networking event at our city centre location with a panel discussion featuring experts from the University of Nottingham, RSM UK, and Browne Jacobson, and facilitated by Professor David Park, Dean of Nottingham University Business School.

The evening started with an engaging networking session, followed by a thought-provoking panel discussion featuring industry experts. Each shared their expertise on key governance challenges and opportunities, sparking meaningful discussions around this critical topic.

Jason Carter, Director of Governance and Assurance at the University of Nottingham, discussed the need for fast and effective decision-making and mitigating risks to deliver key components. Sam Abbas, RSM UK’s Risk and Assurance Director, brought the topic alive with examples from his own experience, and Craig Elder, Partner at Browne Jacobson, highlighted governance within contracts, proportionality and exit strategies, and highlighted the need for them to be more than just an afterthought.

There were great debates around compliance, risk management and mitigation, proportionality and the importance of contracting for change due to the rapid evolution of AI.

Reflecting on the event, Professor David Park said:

It was a real pleasure to host the first in a series of collaborative events last week in the Executive Education training facilities on Castle Meadow Campus. The expert panel did an excellent job bringing the business-critical topic of governance to life in an accessible, sometimes humorous, way.

The diverse audience included local entrepreneurs and business owners, representatives from regionally-based corporates, members of charity boards, University staff and students. Topics and questions were wide-ranging and included the need to be flexible and design for change, the importance of proportionality in negotiations, processes and terms, a discussion regarding how shareholders and consumers might grow to trust claims around sustainability and how these might be audited, and the increasingly important role that AI is having across the topic.

Sam Abbas from RSM UK added:

“It was a privilege to represent RSM UK as a panel member at last night’s collaborative event at Nottingham University Business School with Browne Jacobson, where I had the opportunity to share my insights on the diverse governance strategies essential in today’s business world.”

This event was part of Nottingham University Business School’s ongoing commitment to connecting industry leaders, professionals, and academics to share knowledge and address pressing issues. We now look forward to the next event and continuing to create opportunities for collaboration and dialogue.
