Douglas Adu is an Associate Professor in Management Accounting at the Nottingham University Business School of the University of Nottingham. Prior to joining the University of Nottingham, he was a Senior Lecturer in Accounting and Finance at Teesside University, UK and an Academic Tutor in Accounting and Finance at the University of Limerick, Ireland (Republic). In addition, Douglas had previously held part-time academic positions at University of Huddersfield (UK), Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (Ghana) and Mampong Technical College of Education (Ghana). Douglas also held both junior and middle level management roles in uniBank (Ghana) Limited prior to pursuing a career in academia.

Douglas has an interest in curriculum development. At Teesside University, Douglas served as course director for BSc (Hon) Accounting and Finance, and BA (Hons) Business and Accounting at the undergraduate level. He developed and redesigned the BSc (Hons) Accounting and Finance, and BA (Hons) Business and Accounting courses and created different modules at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the University. In addition, Douglas served as a lead for the Sustainable Finance Research Group (SFRG) in Teesside University International Business School.

Douglas holds a first PhD in Accounting, University of Limerick (Ireland), a second PhD in Finance, University of Huddersfield, UK, an MSc Finance degree (with distinction) from University of Southampton (UK) and an MBA degree from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana. Originally from science background, he also holds an MSc Biotechnology and a BSc. Biochemistry degrees from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (Ghana). Additionally, he is a Certified Practicing Accountant (CPA) Australia and Certified Compliance Officer (with distinction). Douglas is also a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA) in the UK.

Dr Adu's research interest lies in the broad areas of management accounting, carbon metric in managerial performance, executive compensation, carbon and biodiversity accounting, Environmental Social and Governance (ESG) disclosure and firm performance, corporate governance and business ethics, Climate and Health including Clinical Governance, FinTech and Blockchain. Douglas is an Associate Editor at Business Strategy and the Environment journal.

Douglas collaborates closely with influential policy makers and corporate executives to establish strategies for business efficiency and to put high corporate governance standards into practice. He served on the committee that developed the first National Code of Corporate Governance for Ghana in 2022 as well as the committee that developed the Pan-African Framework for Director Development Programmes in 2024.
