Duncan Angwin MA (Hons), PGCE, M.Phil., MBA, PhD, is Professor in Strategic Management. Prior to this position he held a named personal chair, the Sir Roland Professor of Strategic Management and was Head of Department at Lancaster University, UK. Duncan gained his PhD from Warwick Business School, which focused upon UK takeovers, and held many posts there during his 20 years tenure. Prior to his time in academia, Duncan was a senior investment banker, predominantly based in London and Paris, focusing upon corporate finance, international mergers and acquisitions transactions and strategic advice. His original degrees were from the University of Cambridge.

Duncan is best known for his research into Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) (he is the most published researcher on M&A in the UK) and Strategic Management, where he focuses mainly on the practices of strategists. To date he has published over 50 articles in 24 different peer reviewed international journals such as Academy of Management Learning & Education, Academy of Management Executive, British Journal of Management, California Management Review, Journal of Business Research, Journal of World Business, Long Range Planning, MIT Sloan Management Review, Organization Studies.

Duncan has authored and co-authored 14 books, including Europe's top selling strategy textbook, Exploring Strategy, 12th edition, (2020) published by Pearson, which has sold 1m+ copies globally, and The Strategy Pathfinder, now in its 3rd edition. His book Mergers and Acquisitions (2007), published by Blackwell is innovative in being the first in the field to adopt a multi-disciplinary approach to the topic and has been described as a 'highly topical book that provides a multi-disciplinary perspective, ranging from finance to psychology, on the subject of mergers and acquisitions.' His book Strategy Builder (2015) published by Wiley, is novel in identifying how companies use strategic management techniques and frameworks in practice. This has been very well received globally and is currently printed in three languages. Duncan has also published many articles for practitioners, won numerous conference paper awards at leading international conferences and has sat on several editorial boards, including Journal of Management Studies. His Google Scholar citations stand at 4,671, with a H-index of 25 and an i10-index of 39. On research gate he has over 65,000 reads.

Duncan has won many awards for teaching excellence and teaches all over the world. He is active in executive education and corporate advice. Duncan is a judge for the Management Consultancies Association (MCA) annual awards. He has won in excess of £10m in research grants, from funders such as the European Union, University of Oxford and ICAEW, and currently researches M&A communications, practices and performance; strategy practices and international management.

Duncan is best known for his research into Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) (he is the most published researcher on M&A in the UK) and Strategic Management, where he focuses mainly on the practices of strategists. As a researcher Duncan is unusual in the strategy field by pursuing engaged scholarship and a phenomenon based approach, using multiple research methodologies. This ensures his research is both rigorous and relevant to practicing managers.
