He actively mentors a variety of student, staff and alumni start-up businesses through the University's Ingenuity Lab and runs regular training and evening classes about starting a business. He has also helped lead / support a variety of the University's pitching and student start-up activities including: mentoring and judging on the Ingenuity and Young Entrepreneur (Bioscience YES) competitions; acting as an "Elevator" (mentor) for the Duke of Yorks Pitch@Palace (7.0 - 9.0), and mentoring the University's entries for the 2017 & 2018 Universitas21 international Global Ingenuity Challenge.

As well as his expertise in academia and professional training, David also has a wealth of practical entrepreneurial experience gained in the UK and New Zealand from starting and running his own innovative businesses. He has first-hand experience raising start-up funds ($multiM), growing effective, multi-disciplinary teams, and completing $multiM licensing deals with a FTSE100 plc.

He is also an Entrepreneur in Residence (under the UK's Small Business Charter) actively supporting a number of early-stage companies across the UK at both strategic and operational levels. Although his degrees are in engineering and artificial intelligence, he has set-up / run start-ups in a variety of sectors ranging from satellite navigation and geospatial engineering to professional CPD (enhancing employability skills for UK civil servants) and commercialising new food ingredients. David has recently co-founded New Sparks Community Interest Company. This Nottingham-based social enterprise focuses on providing training and mentoring to individuals, community groups, trade unions and businesses who either wish to start or develop a business, or seek employment, career growth or development / promotion opportunities. In particular, New Sparks CIC focuses on nurturing diversity and promoting social inclusion, aspiration and enhanced opportunity for all. David completed 3 degrees at the University of Nottingham in the 90\'s (BEng, MSc, PhD) and lives in Nottingham.
