Aiswarya Krishnan - MSc Business Analytics

Aiswarya Krishnan studied MSc in Business Analytics at Nottingham University Business School in 2024-25. She was introduced to the subject during her undergraduate course and was interested as it combines analytical techniques with business management practices.

She explained: “I believe with technological innovations developing daily and the amount of data available multiplying exponentially, it is important to adopt a data-driven decision-making strategy in order to create an impact to the industry and the business. However, I realised that to truly make an impact in the business world, I needed to equip myself with the analytical tools and technical skills that transform raw data into actionable insights.”

The university’s reputation as a Russell Group institution as well as the structure of the course – blending data science, machine learning and statistical techniques with real-world business applications - contributed to Aiswarya’s decision to study at Nottingham. She added: “What really made me choose Nottingham University Business School in particular, was the fact that I would be taught by professionals who are currently working in this industry, and I felt that this would give me the opportunity to gain practical insights from their experiences and ongoing projects.”

One of Aiswarya’s favourite modules was Machine Learning and Predictive Analytics. The module not only covers the theory behind machine learning models but also teaches how to apply them using Python and SQL, currently two of the most powerful tools in data analytics. She explained:

“It was my first time learning coding. However, the course was very friendly for beginners and is structured in such a way that you can develop your coding skills over the duration of the course. What I enjoyed most was the hands-on nature of the course - we were not just learning models in isolation but applying them to real-world datasets to solve problems like customer segmentation, demand forecasting, and churn prediction. It’s incredibly rewarding to see how models can be used to uncover patterns and inform strategic decisions.”

In addition to her academic studies, Aiswarya has benefitted from activities beyond the classroom that have helped her to develop both personally and professionally. She has attended networking classes, events with guest speakers from industry, and been an active member of student societies such as Enactus and Nottingham Consultancy Network.

Enactus is an international organisation that supports young leaders to use innovation and entrepreneurship skills to solve the world’s most pressing problems. Through her involvement with Enactus, Aiswarya has had the opportunity to work on social projects such as Reconnect which focuses on digital inclusion for homeless individuals in Nottingham. Thanks to this opportunity she has gained practical skills in leadership, project management, and community outreach.

Involvement in the Nottingham Consultancy Network provided a platform for Aiswarya to gain insights about consulting and receive constructive feedback about her presentation skills.  She was also a member of the MSc Social Committee, where she helped plan and organise events that bring together postgraduate students from diverse backgrounds.

She said: “This role has allowed me to not only strengthen my event planning and leadership skills but also build meaningful friendships and foster a sense of community.”

Summarising her experiences at Nottingham University Business School, Aiswarya commented:

“My time at the University of Nottingham so far has been nothing short of transformative, as my experience has gone beyond the classroom and has helped me develop both personally and professionally.

“The diversity of opportunities at Nottingham - from volunteering, networking events, and cultural festivals, to peaceful walks around Highfields Lake - make the student experience well-rounded and deeply enriching. There's always something happening on campus, and there’s a place for everyone to belong, regardless of your interests. Furthermore, the staff, faculty and the students at Nottingham really made Nottingham feel like home - as an international student I was afraid of adjusting to a new environment and home sickness the most. However, the transition has been very smooth so far.”
