Anudeep Sridhar - MSc Industrial Engineering and Operations Management

With a background in manufacturing, Anudeep has always been curious about what makes operations run efficiently and how they can be improved. That interest, combined with real-world experience in the sector, led him to pursue an MSc Industrial Engineering and Operations Management at Nottingham University Business School.

For Anudeep, The University of Nottingham stood out for its academic reputation, practical course design and strong industry links. A conversation with a former student helped him make the final decision. Anudeep said: “I chose the University of Nottingham because the course structure aligned well with my interests, and as a Russell Group university, I knew the academic quality would be strong. Speaking with a former alumnus who gave me honest insights into the learning environment, teaching style, and the type of support available helped me make my decision. His positive experience made me feel much more confident about making the move. Also, the campus atmosphere, student community, and strong links with industry made it clear that Nottingham would be the right place for me to grow.”

One of the standout modules for Anudeep was the Quality Management module, taught by Professor Kim Tan (Professor of Operations and Innovation Management). The module is closely linked to his previous experience and introduces practical methods for continuous improvement in manufacturing and service environments. Anudeep commented: “Professor Tan’s lectures were clear, insightful, and full of real-world relevance. His teaching style made the subject even more interesting, and it encouraged me to look at operations from a continuous improvement perspective.”

Professional development

Taking part in the Business Consultancy and Sustainability Challenge gave Anudeep the chance to apply his learning to real-world challenges. It also helped him build key skills in teamwork, problem-solving, strategic thinking, and presenting to stakeholders.

The wider support from the Business School, including careers guidance and networking opportunities, added to the experience. He commented: “The networking events, guest speakers, and career fairs organised by the Business School gave me the chance to connect with professionals, hear from industry experts, and gain insights into what employers are looking for. The careers team were brilliant, offering support with CV writing, interview prep, and job search strategies, all of which have helped me feel more confident and ready for the next step in my career.”

Business Project module

As an alternative to the traditional dissertation, Anudeep opted to take part in the new Business Project module, completing a placement with the healthcare company Haleon. He said:

“Choosing the consultancy project with Haleon was a deliberate decision to gain real-world experience and collaborate closely with an industry partner. Working on a live brief focused on innovation in oral care enabled me to apply my academic learning in a practical, strategic context.

“As team lead, I gained hands-on experience in operating like a consultant, thinking commercially, communicating effectively, and delivering value-added solutions. Working with a diverse group of MSc students enabled us to approach the project from multiple perspectives. I was able to apply concepts from modules like Project Management and Contemporary Operations, which helped bridge the gap between theory and practice.

“The project was both challenging and rewarding, significantly enhancing my leadership skills and standing out as one of the most valuable experiences of my MSc.”

Making the most of student life

Outside of his studies, Anudeep made the most of student life by regularly playing badminton at the Jubilee Sports Centre and David Ross Sports Village on the University Park Campus. He was an active member of the Muay Thai Boxing Society and the Investment and Trading Society, and contributed to a university focus group aimed at improving the student experience. Anudeep also took the opportunity to complete a Microsoft certification to further enhance his technical skills.

Looking ahead, Anudeep aims to build a career in operations or manufacturing, with a focus on process optimisation or supply chain management. His long-term goal is to step into a leadership role where he can drive innovation and efficiency.

Living in Melton Hall, university-managed accommodation, also helped shape his experience. Anudeep said: “The accommodation was well-maintained, comfortable, and conveniently located, making it easy to access both the campus and the city centre. I was able to meet people from all over the world, which was a great way to make friends and experience different cultures.”

Advice for future students

Finally, Anudeep's advice for future students:

Make the most of everything on offer, from sports and societies to volunteering or even technical courses like the Microsoft certification. These experiences not only enhance your university experience but also help you build skills that will be valuable in your future career. The support from academic staff and the careers team is fantastic, and there’s always something happening on campus. It’s been a great environment for personal growth and developing the skills needed for the workplace.

Take the time to explore the city. Nottingham is full of culture, history, and green spaces, and it’s easy to feel at home here. It’s the perfect place to study, relax, and build lifelong connections.
