Serah Dominic - MSc Banking and Finance 2022

Serah completed an MSc in Banking and Finance at the University of Nottingham in 2022 and now works as the Operations Manager for Stories Arabia FZ LCC in India.

Reflecting on why she chose Nottingham, Serah said: “I chose the University of Nottingham because of its strong reputation for academic excellence and its globally recognised MSc Banking and Finance programme. The university’s emphasis on research-driven learning, combined with access to industry insights and expert faculty, made it an ideal place to develop my financial expertise.”

Campus life and support made a real difference. She explained: "The vibrant campus life, diverse student community and opportunities for professional networking further enriched my experience, making it a perfect choice for both academic and personal growth.

"The supportive academic environment, well-structured curriculum and access to excellent resources made my learning journey smooth and enriching. The university’s faculty and student community also played a key role in fostering a positive experience, allowing me to focus on my studies and make the most of my time at Nottingham."

What really stood out for Serah was the balance between course content and teaching approach.

Describing what drew her to the programme, she said: “I chose to study an MSc in Banking and Finance at the University of Nottingham because of my deep interest in financial markets and their impact on global economies. The course provided a perfect blend of theoretical foundations and practical applications, equipping me with the skills to analyse financial data, assess risk and understand the complexities of banking regulations. What I enjoyed most was the dynamic learning environment, engaging with experienced faculty, collaborating with diverse peers, and exploring real-world case studies that brought financial concepts to life.”

Her degree laid the foundations that carried into her career, she noted:

The course enhanced my ability to assess financial strategies, manage resources efficiently and think critically, which are skills that are essential in my role as an Operations Manager. Additionally, the university’s emphasis on research and real-world case studies helped me develop a strategic mindset, which I apply daily in managing projects, optimising workflows and ensuring smooth operations within a fast-paced creative industry.

Those skills transferred seamlessly into a creative setting, she added: “Even though my current role is in the creative industry, the skills I gained remained highly relevant. I use financial planning and budgeting skills to manage resources effectively, apply risk assessment techniques to anticipate challenges and rely on data analysis to optimise workflows and improve operational efficiency. The strategic thinking and decision-making abilities I developed also support my project management, client negotiations and overall business operations.”

Serah’s advice to new students is very practical: "Make the most of every opportunity the university offers. Engage with your professors, participate in discussions and take advantage of the excellent academic resources."

Her final recommendation is particulary helpful:

Beyond academics, get involved in student societies and networking events as they’re great for building connections and enhancing your experience. Time management is key, so stay organised and balance your studies with extracurricular activities. Most importantly, enjoy the journey, embrace new challenges, and make lifelong memories.
