The Sustainability and Societal Impact Fellows Programme

Nottingham University Business School successfully launched the Sustainability and Societal Impact (SSI) Fellowship Programme during the 2024/25 academic year and the programme is continuing to grow and develop. 

The programme involves a diverse group of students - including undergraduates, MSc students and those studying for PhDs - contributing to the school's sustainability and societal impact agenda through a range of impactful projects. 

Activities include:

  • assessing the Business School’s environmental impact and identifying opportunities for improvement
  • engaging peers in sustainability actions
  • contributing to the Edible Campus Project - a university-wide initiative led by the school

Additionally, the Fellows are leading the Positive Impact Rating (PIR), a student-led survey that enables business schools worldwide to evaluate their sustainability and ethical practices.


 

About the Sustainability and Societal Impact (SSI) Fellows Programme

The programme aims to:

  • develop informed change-makers and responsible leaders of the future by enhancing the skills and knowledge of Fellows while inspiring and empowering other students to take action and create change
  • enable Fellows to gain valuable experience in consultancy, project management, event planning, budgeting and marketing 
  • allow Fellows to benefit from a tailored support programme designed to develop their personal and professional skills

Jinxi is a second-year BSc Finance, Accounting and Management Student who is passionate about sustainability and believes in its power to the future of business. 

She said: "My goal is to bridge my academic studies with practical, sustainable solutions, and I am particularly interested in how the Business School can lead this charge."

Jinxi continued: "To me, sustainability isn't just a concept, it's the most exciting and necessary part of business's future. I'm eager to bring my passion and fresh energy to our Business School, helping to weave sustainability into everything we do. I want to connect what I learn in the class with real-world action, whether that's by helping to build partnerships or getting involved in projects that make a tangible difference. I believe that together, we can ensure our business school is a vibrant hub for positive change."

As part of the Sustainability and Societal Impact Fellowship, Anabella is exploring how the Business School can become more sustainable in every aspect.

Anabella said: "I’m interested in creating practical ways to make positive change and in helping build a culture where sustainability is part of everything we do. It’s great to be part of a Business School that leads by example, showing how responsible management can influence real change beyond the classroom."

As part of the Sustainability and Societal Impact Fellowship, he is exploring ways to strengthen sustainable practices and encourage a culture of collective responsibility within and outside the university community and at a global level. He strongly believes that promoting the United Nations’ SDG, ‘Responsible Consumption and Production’, can make a meaningful difference in shaping a more sustainable future.

Shashank says: "My inspiration comes from thinkers like Charles Darwin and Jane Goodall who showed how closely human progress is connected to the natural world. Darwin’s perspective on interconnected ecosystems and Goodall’s commitment to conservation and compassionate action remind me that every choice we make has an impact.”

He said: “I desire to be of value to society, and I hope to better learn what it means to keep sustainability and social needs at the forefront of decision-making by becoming an SSI fellow. I hope to play whatever part I can for the University to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050. We all must do our best to collaborate and work towards achieving the targets set in the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).”
