Description

This week (in a change to the previously advertised session) we welcome Orestis Kopsacheilis with  Is there an “I” in persuasion?

Abstract:
Previous research has shown that individuals are reluctant to updating their prior beliefs during persuasive attempts. Particularly in emotionally or politically charged topics (such as racial discrimination or climate change), it has been suggested that people will avoid new information when that threatens dearly held beliefs. In this study we propose that the role of “ego” is also important in understanding persuasion resistance. To the extent that persuasion is perceived as a competition, being persuaded is akin to being defeated, resulting in a propensity to stick to one’s initial view. We explore this conjecture in an experimental setting where we manipulate the degree of perceived competitiveness between persuader an persuadee, while keeping their monetary incentives aligned.
