Russian and Slavonic Studies centenary 2016

Celebrating 100 years of Russian and Slavonic Studies in Nottingham

Teaching of Russian at The University of Nottingham started in 1915-1916, when Basil Slepchenko, a Cossack from Ekaterinodar on a study visit to England, began a teaching post in Russian at Nottingham University College. This event marked the beginning of Russian and Slavonic Studies at Nottingham and sets us off as one of the oldest Slavonic departments in the country.

We are very proud of our history and would like to welcome you to join us in our celebrations.

Throughout its eventful history the Department developed strengths in Russian, Central and Southeast European languages and cultures becoming one of only a few departments in the UK with a broad Slavonic coverage. Working together, many generations of students and staff of the Department have shaped exciting study programmes, generated ground-breaking research in language, literature and cultural studies and nourished remarkable traditions such as student magazines and theatrical productions.

At the present time the Department of Russian and Slavonic Studies is a dynamic institution with a unique amalgam of hospitality and cosmopolitanism. It fosters its own culture of remembrance but also looks towards the future with partnerships in Russia, Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia and throughout the world.

The Department of Russian and Slavonic Studies will mark its centenary with a series of events including concerts, film screenings and guest speakers.

The highlights of the year-long programme will be:
