Wobble Week 2023

Wobble Week Website

Monday 20 - Friday 24 November 2023

Please note: This page will be updated later in the year with details for Wobble Week 2024

A week of activities to support students who are feeling overwhelmed by university.

You might be missing home, feeling like you don’t fit in, finding it difficult to motivate yourself to learn, finding your second year university experience differs from your first, and if you are an international student you may be struggling with British culture. Everyone experiences moments where they feel unsure about things or have a ‘wobble’. Wobbles can happen about anything at any time. We want you to know that however your feeling it’s OK. The university is well prepared to support you.

Wobble week aims to foster a sense of belonging between all students across campus, encouraging an honesty in sharing and acknowledging some of our more vulnerable moments. Wobble Week provides an opportunity to unwind, share and belong.

Neurodiversity Panel Discussion

Everything was so exciting when you arrived, there was a buzz, everything was new, everyone was new. But now, maybe that shine is starting to wear off. You’re not quite sure if you can remember what was said in all of those talks during the first week, how will you budget for your meals and living costs? Can you even call your family for support? Are the people you’re hanging around with your friends, can you be yourself around them? These are some of the concerns that begin to bubble to the surface as the excitement begins to fade and reality sets in.

We know that a sense of belonging is the most significant factor in student retention and success and this is why we want to make sure students know that there are other people out there just like them, there are societies within their schools and student support networks that they can access.

The ‘Find your people’ Seminars during Wobble Week are the initial seminars that are part of a larger series of ‘Diverse Speakers in STEM’ that will take place throughout the 23/24 academic year, the focus is on belonging and sharing lived experience of fellow students, alumni and staff from within the Faculty. We would like to demonstrate how diverse our peers are and the many obstacles and challenges they have faced or continue to face. We start by shining a light on the experiences of Women in STEM and those who identify as Neurodivergent in two panel discussions.

This is the perfect opportunity to learn more about their experiences, the tips and tricks that have helped them along the way and pose your own questions to them.

There will be time to socialise afterwards with pizza and games, whilst discovering some of the student networks and societies that can support you during your time at university.

Expectations vs reality of university- Lets chat about it

Many of us come to university with a set of expectations of what our experience will be like, if the reality turns out to be different (which it often is) you can be left feeling disappointed, alone or even questioning your decision to be at university.  So lets talk about it, as hearing other students shared experience is one way to reaffirm your own feelings and dispel isolation. There will also be games and stone painting to do whilst you chat to relax and have some fun.

Self-Metta Meditation Session

"Metta" is a Buddhist word often translated as "loving-kindness", or sometimes as "friendliness." We've probably all heard about the importance of being kind to ourselves, and we may agree with the idea -- but sometimes it can be hard to know how to put it into practice.

The hour-long session will include a short talk followed by a led meditation where you can explore the practice in real time. While metta is a Buddhist word, there is no need to be Buddhist to attend this session or to try out the practice for yourself! Open to people of all faiths and none. Come and see what you think.

Women in STEM Panel Discussion

Open to Faculty of Science/Engineering/STEM students only register here
