Principal Research Fellow, Faculty of Engineering
Dr. Zhirong Liao finished his PhD study from Harbin Institute of Technology and joined the Rolls-Royce UTC in Manufacturing and On-Wing Technology, University of Nottingham as a research fellow since 2016. He was award a Nottingham Research Fellowship and started his independent academic career at University of Nottingham since 2019. He is also a member of Propulsion Futures Beacon of Excellence at the University of Nottingham. His research area mainly focuses on conventional and nonconventional manufacturing technologies with conscious of materials science. He is an Associate Member of the International Academy for Production Engineering (CIRP), Memeber of Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), Member of International Society for Nanomanufacturing (ISNM). Dr. Zhirong Liao is also the Assistant Editor of the International Journal of Machine Tools and Manufacture, Guest Editor of the Chinese Journal of Mechanical Engineering, Topic Editor of the Journal of Manufacturing and Materials Processing.
Machining of special materials (composites, biomaterials, stainless steels, Ni/Ti based superalloys); Energy Beam machining (Waterjet, Laser beam machining); Micro-mechanics of materials (Nanoindentation, micropillar test); Surface integrity; Design of innovative tooling for special purpose (e.g. brittle material cutting tools); Development of special machine tools (4-axis miniature machine tools); Modelling of machining processes (e.g. orthogonal cutting, turning, milling and drilling); Online monitoring of machining processes detection and avoidance of process malfunctions; Signal processing technology; Electrical/Control system development for special mechanical system (e.g. NC system, vision-based intelligent vehicle system)
