Biography
I have nearly 30 years' experience, at post-doctoral level since 1999, mostly in the field of Higher Education sector archives cataloguing, database and research projects. These projects include: The Welsh Manorial Records Database Project; The Records of English and Welsh Lay and Clerical Taxation Projects; 'Completing the Calendar of Patent Rolls Elizabeth I' Project; The Edward Lhwyd Correspondence Project; The Archbishops' Registers Revealed, Marc Fitch and The Northern Way Projects; The Alfred Russel Wallace Correspondence Project and The Place-Names of Shropshire Project. I am currently working part-time on a project for the Bodleian Library, University of Oxford, to help edit the catalogue of the manuscripts of Elias Ashmole to go online, and part-time for the University of Nottingham on The Place-Names of Herefordshire Project.
Expertise Summary
I have Classical Latin to 'A' Level standard and a very good knowledge of Medieval Latin, having worked on very many different types of government and other records. I have excellent palaeographical skills and currently assist my former colleague, Dr Paul Dryburgh, Principal Records Specialist, The National Archives, Kew, in online and in-person sessions in reading, transcribing and translating old documents for the Mortimer History Society Reading Group, and previously also online for a similar group, Explore, based in Newcastle upon Tyne. I have good keyboard and IT skills; I am also fluent in several languages and have conversational Welsh. My personal research interests are mostly in Naval History, having published with Anne Hawkins an edition of letters of seamen below the rank of commissioned officer in the British Royal Navy, 1793-1815.
