Biography
I was educated at the University of Essex (MA) and the University of Nottingham (PhD). During and after my doctoral studies, I worked on a number of funded research projects. This included working on two projects funded by the University's HERMES awards that enabled the establishment of a professional communication research and consultancy centre, Linguistic Profiling for Professionals. I worked also as Research Fellow on an ESRC-funded project titled Simulating Medical Talk, analysing healthcare communication.
I currently carry out research, teaching and research-informed training and consultancy work in the broader area of professional communication, and specifically talk at and around work and health, and language, gender and sexuality. Over the years, I have worked with a number of public, private and third sector organisations, applying findings of linguistics research to inform professional practice.
I currently act as a mentor on a Knowledge Transfer Project (KTP) with the School of Psychology and creative marketing agency, Together. I am also Director of Assessment in the School of English.

Past Research
I have been carrying out professional communication research for over 10 years now.
I worked on two University-funded projects on leadership communication. The Linguistic Profiling projects involved researching the communicative practices of business leaders working in a wide range of professional settings, including public, private and third sector organisations. The projects were instrumental in establishing a professional communication research and consultancy centre, Linguistic Profiling for Professionals.
In 2016, I worked on an ESRC-funded project titled Simulating Medical Talk, investigating the communicative aspects of contemporary clinical examinations and the training of postgraduate doctors.
My current research builds on this work carried out in the areas of professional and healthcare communication.
