The School of English holds an annual fundraising event in December to help pay the cost of various building and resource projects at Upendo. Each Christmas, we run a highly successful bake sale. Staff and students are invited to bake sweet or savoury treats over a period of two weeks at the end of the autumn term. The baked goods are then sold in the School of English Management and Research Office to the hungry occupants of the Trent Building!
In the most recent 2017 bake sale, we raised a record £534! These funds have subsequently gone towards sponsoring a lucky child with the remaining funds going towards buying food for all of the children in the School.

Alumni Laureate Award
In 2009 Masibo received an Alumni Laureate Award from the University to recognise his work and partnership with Wadsworth Fields Primary School, whose teaching staff visited Kenya in 2009. The two schools have embarked on a joint project to share information about their primary school curriculum.

In July 2010, two of our undergraduate students, Caroline Adams and Fiona Stockdale, travelled with Stephen McKibbin, the School's IT Officer, to visit Upendo in Kenya. This trip was funded by donations from the University's Alumni Annual Fund and the School of English.

In March 2011, the School was pleased to welcome two of Upendo's teachers, Catherine Makonge (the Head Teacher) and Stella Muteshi, to the UK. Catherine and Stella were on a British Council sponsored exchange visit with Wadsworth Fields Primary School. A meeting was held for staff and students in the School to meet the teachers from Kenya.

Although there is no more funding to support student trips to Upendo, students who wish to travel to Kenya independently will be warmly welcomed by Masibo and his teachers. It costs approximately £1,200 per person to travel to Kenya (including expenses to cover petrol and food etc. at the school) and students who wish to fundraise for themselves will be supported in their fundraising activities by the School of English and the English Society. This is a fantastic opportunity for students who are interested in travelling to Africa and/or a career in teaching.
