Dr Lucy Jones, Associate Professor in Sociolinguistics and Director of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion for the Faculty of Arts, has been awarded a British Academy Mid-Career Fellowship.
The Fellowships support outstanding individual researchers with excellent research proposals. They also aim to promote public understanding and engagement with humanities and social sciences.
Dr Jones’ work will explore how LGBTQ+ youth use language to position themselves in relation to one another and the wider world. It will focus on how young people’s language use reveals not only their gender and sexual identity, but other aspects of identity such as their race and social class. It will also demonstrate the importance of using language respectfully and accurately when talking about identities.
Professor Máire Ní Fhlathúin, Head of the School of English at the University of Nottingham said: “I am delighted to congratulate Lucy on her very well-deserved success in receiving a British Academy Mid-Career Fellowship. These Fellowships are hugely important to the University's research mission, giving high-achieving colleagues time to complete major research projects and share their findings with the widest possible audience.”
I’m absolutely delighted to have received this award, as it gives me the opportunity to bring this project to fruition. I’ll also be able to continue working with, and amplifying the voices of, LGBTQ+ youth.
The year-long Fellowship will begin in September and it will lead to the creation of a new glossary of LGBTQ+ identities and a public exhibition in 2024.
