Dr Saccoccio awarded prestigious Leverhulme Fellowship

A bearded man (Fabio Saccoccio) wearing jeans, a Ghostbusters t-shirt beneath a red checked shirt and a cap leans casually against a bench with the University of Nottingham Trent Building behind him on a beautiful sunny day.

We are delighted to announce that Dr Fabio Saccoccio has been awarded a prestigious Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowship. The award will fund his exciting research within the University of Nottingham's Department of Classics and Archaeology for three years. The Fellowship is entitled ‘Ethnicity beyond the Rubicon: the Cenomani in Cisalpine Gaul’ with an award value of £101,000.

Dr Saccoccio will be working on the ancient Cenomani, a Gaulish group who invaded northern Italy in the 4th century BC. According to written sources, the Cenomani were a Gallic people who invaded Northern Italy in the fourth century BCE, but they are still poorly understood archaeologically. This project will identify them and examine what they tell us about major issues in ancient history such as migration and cultural integration, using a multi-disciplinary approach that will combine archaeology, linguistics, law, landscape and isotope studies.
