Salvatore Garfi awarded Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship

Dr Salvatore Garfi, Department of Archaeology, has been awarded a prestigious Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship to further their research.

The project is called: Landscapes Encountered by the International Brigades in the Spanish Civil War.

Project outline:

An archaeological study of the conflict landscapes encountered by the volunteers of the International Brigades in the Spanish Civil War. Whilst a great deal is known about the Brigades in terms of interworld war geopolitics, their history and makeup much less is known about the materiality of the landscapes in which they lived, fought, and died. Drawing upon the techniques and methods of landscape archaeology a unique and holistic vision of specific Spanish war-scapes will be constructed, contextualised within the growing field of modern (20th century) conflict archaeology.
