Honorary Citizenship for Professor Stephen Hodkinson

The Department of Classics congratulates Stephen Hodkinson, Professor of Ancient History and head of the Department of Classics at Nottingham, who was awarded the Honorary Citizenship of the city of Sparta on 17 September at the Central Public Library in Sparta.

The award ceremony took place on the first day of  the SSCIP 4th International Conference on 'Childhood and Education: a view from the past', hosted by The University of Nottingham and the Municipality of Sparti.

Stephen Hodkinson's main current research interest is ancient Sparta and its reception in modern times. Between 2004 and 2009, he directed an AHRC-funded project on Sparta in Comparative Perspective, Ancient to Modern. The project compared classical Sparta with other ancient Greek city-states and with societies at other historical times and places. It also examined the way in which Sparta has been appropriated as a comparative model in modern political and intellectual thought.
